Medical Hypnosis:

Support For Physical
Health, Healing, & Well-Being

Medical Hypnosis Overview

Medical hypnosis is the use of hypnosis as a complementary approach to support people who are coping with health conditions, medical procedures, pain, stress, or treatment-related anxiety. It is not a substitute for appropriate medical care. Rather, it can be used alongside treatment from physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals to help you work with the psychological, emotional, and mind-body aspects of your experience.

How Medical Hypnosis May Help

Medical situations often involve more than the physical condition itself. You may also be dealing with fear, anticipatory anxiety, discomfort, uncertainty, difficulty relaxing, or concern about an upcoming procedure. Hypnosis can provide a focused and deeply relaxed setting in which you can practice responding differently to these experiences.

Depending upon your needs, Mark may use hypnosis to support:

  • relaxation and stress reduction
  • coping with chronic pain or physical discomfort
  • anxiety before medical or dental procedures
  • fear of needles or medical environments
  • claustrophobia related to scans or procedures
  • preparation for surgery
  • recovery-related stress
  • coping with treatment-related discomfort
  • sleep and rest
  • irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions where gut-directed hypnotherapy may be appropriate
  • healthier habits that support overall well-being

Responses to hypnosis vary from person to person and by condition.

Hypnosis for Pain & Discomfort

Pain is influenced by both physical signals and the way the nervous system processes those signals. Hypnosis may help some people change how strongly pain captures attention, reduce associated tension or fear, and develop greater confidence in their ability to cope. Research suggests hypnosis may be helpful for some chronic-pain conditions, although results are not uniform across all types of pain. [Explore Chronic Pain & Mind-Body Support]

Preparing for Medical Procedures

Hypnosis and guided imagery can also be used before medical or dental procedures.

Sessions may focus on:

  • reducing anticipatory anxiety
  • becoming more comfortable with medical settings
  • practicing relaxation
  • preparing mentally for surgery or testing
  • coping with needles, scans, or confined spaces
  • developing imagery or self-hypnosis techniques you can use during appropriate procedures

Some research has found promising results for hypnosis in reducing anxiety associated with medical and dental procedures, although the overall evidence remains mixed.

Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy & IBS

Hypnosis has also been studied specifically for irritable bowel syndrome. Gut-directed hypnotherapy uses focused relaxation, imagery, and suggestion aimed at changing the way the brain and digestive system respond to one another. Research suggests that it may help some people with IBS symptoms and related quality-of-life concerns. Clinical guidelines have included gut-directed psychotherapy, including hypnotherapy, as an option, although the quality of evidence is still considered limited.

Learning Self-Hypnosis

One useful aspect of medical hypnosis is that many techniques can be practiced independently. Mark may teach you self-hypnosis, guided imagery, breathing, relaxation, or attentional techniques that you can use between sessions or, when appropriate, during medical treatment. The goal is to give you additional ways to participate actively in your own comfort and emotional well-being.

Complementary Care

Medical hypnosis should be used alongside appropriate medical evaluation and treatment. Mark does not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe or alter medication, or recommend discontinuing conventional care. Any changes to medication, treatment, diet, activity, or other medical recommendations should be discussed with the healthcare professionals managing your condition.

If you would like to explore whether medical hypnosis may be appropriate as part of your care, you are welcome to schedule a complementary consultation.
